I love Nikola Tesla! Such a free thinker who got screwed by the energy companies and the history books.
There’s a reason Elon Musk named his electric car after him… he’s awesome!
David Blaine, the magician, also paid homage to him with his Tesla coil stunt. He grabbed electricity from the sky (dangerous).
Today only! 4th July sale! On his website, all merchandise is 20% off. Card decks, posters, T-shirts and more. The DB black baseball cap is really awesome, if they are selling that. Use the coupon code given on the site.
David is doing shows in Canada July 4th and 5th, so he’s missing Independence Day. I am going to The Strip in Vegas to watch the fireworks… a little worried about how crazy it could get on The Strip.
UPDATE: So there were no fireworks visible on The Strip! I stood around waiting (actually I sat on a fountain by the Venetian) with tons of people. 9PM finally arrived and everyone became confused and frustrated – no fireworks! I saw 2 fireworks lit off by Circus Circus but obscured by buildings, north end of the Strip. And Mandalay Bay, south end of the Strip, was reported to be setting some off but the crowds of people by me couldn’t see them. I guess everyone was expecting fireworks over Caesar’s Palace, but they lit them off last Saturday night! So, did anyone come out to explain to the LARGE CROWDS of people waiting that there would be no fireworks? No! I really think the police should have told people to disperse, as a form of crowd control. Or someone from one of the casinos could have explained it to people. No fireworks on the 4th! No one knew what was going on, and most people were still standing on the sidewalks, waiting, when I gave up and left! Vegas sucks.
You may have noticed I changed my name on Instagram to Magical Social Media. This is a new re-branding I’m doing! I was calling my freelance animated video work Ellen’s Animations, but I decided it sounded too cartoon-y (like a Disney movie) and I wanted to include my freelance social media graphics (I can design headers for your Etsy shop or your Twitter page). Soooooo, since you know I like magic and metaphysical stuff like fairies and unicorns, I am going with Magical Social Media. The long version is Magical Social Media Marketing, but that doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue (or fit as a social media name). I am hoping to move to CA and get a custom MAGICAL license plate 😉 Since I get stressed out in traffic, I have now added Portland and north Denver/Boulder area to my list of new cities (but each is a 2-day drive and my cat screamed the WHOLE WAY here from Colorado when I moved to Vegas).
I have updated my online portfolio to include SOCIAL MEDIA GRAPHICS (more examples coming later) and T-SHIRT AND SOUVENIR DESIGNS (from my Zazzle shop, BlackCatDrawings). And I am excited to offer more graphic design items on Fiverr to help people with their social media sites. I used to design souvenirs and I really liked it, so I’m looking for freelance work or a part-time job in LA doing that. Plus t-shirts.
I was all excited to see Angels in my Hair author Lorna Byrne! She is from Ireland and rarely comes to the US. In fact, it was her first trip farther inland than NYC and Boston. I had tickets for her event in Phoenix, but American Airlines had problems and canceled my flight 😦 Because American doesn’t have as many flights as United or Southwest, the next flight they could offer me was 6 hours later! I would have missed half the event 😦 So I got a refund and stayed home.
I highly recommend Lorna Byrne’s first book, Angels in my Hair, an autobiographical look at her life in northern Ireland. It explains how she clearly sees angels. And how they nudge people to be helpful and kind to others.
Anthony Bourdain is on a double-suicide cover along with purse designer Kate Spade in the June 25, 2018, issue of People magazine. If you miss it on newsstands, you can order it for the Kindle from Amazon.com. I really loved Anthony Bourdain! Especially after reading his book, Kitchen Confidential. He made being a chef sound daring and fun! This was before Top Chef was on TV. I think he started the trend of chefs being cool and edgy.
See my previous post about the last episodes of Anthony’s travel show, Parts Unknown, airing on CNN (if you don’t get cable, you can buy the episodes on the Amazon Fire stick).
What is odd about the Anthony Bourdain suicide is that he was in the middle of filming an episode and he had a lot of people around him! The crew was there. And his best friend, chef Eric Ripert (famous for his French cooking at Le Bournadin – follow him on Instagram), was staying at the same small hotel. He was actually waiting for him to come down for breakfast (he hadn’t made it to the dinner they’d planned on the night before, either). When he didn’t show, he asked the hotel staff to open his room and found him dead. 😦
His on-off girlfriend, Italian actress Asia Argento, is friends with Rose McGowen (both have gone public with their abuse at the hands of movie mogul Harvey Weinstein). Rose told reporters that Anthony had reached out to a medical professional for help with depression, but he didn’t follow through with the recommended treatment (likely counseling and anti-depressants). 😦
If you want to see who Anthony Bourdain’s girlfriend is, she is in his Parts Unknown episode about Rome in Season 8. This is how they met!
Support suicide prevention efforts with the buttons and T-shirts I’ve made (click on the photos below). Suicide has touched me deeply because my friend attempted suicide and suffered a brain injury.
Anthony was filming in France when he hanged himself 😦 But this episode remains unfinished and will not be released. The last 2 episodes of his last season, Season 11, have now aired on CNN: Cajun Mardi Gras (in small-town Louisiana) and Bhutan (near Tibet).
I watched 2 of the episodes from Parts Unknown: Season 11 this week to remember him: Hong Kong and Berlin.
The Hong Kong episode is notable because Anthony Bourdain said this was his favorite episode EVER! He was very excited and proud of this episode in the weeks before he died, which makes his suicide even more perplexing. The Hong Kong Parts Unknown is an enjoyable watch; Anthony meets his favorite movie director, who is a very eccentric old guy (British) who lives in Hong Kong and makes movies about tragic love affairs. The two get along like peas in a pod.
Anthony’s girlfriend, Asia Argento, is credited with directing the Hong Kong episode while Christopher Doyle is the cinematographer (Honestly, I’m not really sure what the difference is…which is bad because I used to live in our movie capital, Hollywood! I believe the cinematographer plans the look of the show by deciding what to focus on with the camera.).
The first lines of the show are “I fell in love with Asia…” A fun play on words because he is shown on a boat overlooking Hong Kong harbor, i.e. Asia, but his girlfriend’s name was Asia (pronounced “ah-zee-ah” I believe, because she’s Italian). Then he goes on to say being in love is the best thing, BUT it leaves you lonely (when you cannot be with the one you love). Then it shows him sitting alone on the deck of the boat, jotting notes in his travel journal. If you are looking for answers as to why Anthony Bourdain killed himself, is this the answer?
I also watched Parts Unknown: Berlin because I’ve been thinking about moving to Germany (not to Berlin but to a smaller university town) to go to grad school in environmental science. However, everyone (including a pub patron in this episode) says Berlin is NOTHING like the rest of Germany, which is conservative and quiet. I was put off by the darkness of Berlin – lots of lost souls partying in all-night dance clubs. A) I am done partying and B) I live in Vegas and have had it up to here with all the drug people. AMERICA HAS A DRUG PROBLEM. This isn’t a good thing. It’s not about freedom and doing what you want. It’s about destruction and darkness. I am becoming more of a conspiracy theorist in regards to this: Is the American government making money from the drug trade? If not, why is America teeming with meth heads and opioid/pain pill addicts who become heroin addicts (cheaper and easier to find)? See how many homeless drug addicts you spot today as you drive around town.
Watch American Made, the excellent Tom Cruise movie (and book) about a real-life guy who helped the CIA move guns around to different foreign militias in exchange for drugs (cocaine) bought from the most infamous drug cartels of the day.
I was reading the DailyMailOnline, my favorite news and gossip website (out of Britain), and I came across 2 articles about Earth Angels!
Earth Angels are what angel author Doreen Virtue calls people who are part human and part angel. I have written about this subject myself! See link below.
FREEBIE: Download and print my quiz: angel_quiz
The DailyMailOnline articles are fun to read and include photos of 5 women in the first article (click here to read article 1) and photos and life stores of 5 men in the second article (click here to read article 2).
After you enjoy your free gift from me (angel_quiz), you may want to explore what it means to be an Earth Angel even more! I have written quizzes to determine if you are 2 special kinds of angel: a Cupid Love Angel or a troubled Rockstar Angel. The quizzes and help for angels will arrive at the email you use with PayPal (if you want to use a different email, just let me know by emailing newagestudies at gmail or leaving a comment on this post).
I saw a kid wearing a shirt like this at the David Blaine Live show 😉 It’s so cool! I just opened a Zazzle shop called BlackCatDrawings. Zazzle.com is like CafePress.com where you can design T-shirts and mugs for people to buy. This is my very first T-shirt I designed!
You just order this T-shirt in the size you want and Zazzle makes the shirt and sends it to you. To be honest, the prices aren’t super great. It’s not going to be as cheap as Walmart! As the designer/artist, I only get about $2 – $3 of the T-shirt sale. Most of my items will feature my cute cartoon art. Coming soon: a magic 8-ball design.
This is new poster art for David Blaine Live. I bought it at his show last week in Hollywood, CA. $20 for the poster or you can get a large program ($30) with this and some other poster art from the same artist (Mark Stutzman of Eloqui). I like the retro feel of it! I’m not a fan of demon imagery, though 😦 I like the black crow because David showed us his crow called Drow that he was training to be in his act (in one of his TV specials)…. Maybe he will learn something like swooping in and grabbing a deck of cards with his feet, or stealing a card with his beak. No sign of him in this show.
The program is oversized, like a very small poster size (9.5 x 13 inches). It’s printed on great paper and includes an embossed spade symbol on the back cover. See my photo of it on Instagram (ellens_animations). You could cut it out and put it on your wall. It’s pretty cool – a different color scheme than he usually uses (black and silver/white): a pale sky blue background and a dark creme spade.
I like this photo:
There is also a page in the David Blaine Live program book with this inspirational quote:
I liked the program book, but I think for $30 it should be ALL NEW photos and just the new poster art because the older posters are readily available online and in his book.
